Press Release Summary = Not asking for help, doing everything all by ourselves,
helping others but never asking to have the favor returned is what Peggy Collins
defines as Self-Sufficiency Syndrome. In her recent release, Help is NOT A
Four-Letter Word: Why Doing It All Is Doing You In (McGraw Hill, April 2007),
Collins explains how the syndrome takes the strength found in self-sufficiency and
turns it into a weakness.

Press Release Body = (HENDERSONVILLE, NC) The value of self-sufficiency is as
deeply rooted in American culture as warm apple pie. The very first settlers came
to this continent to make a name for themselves, and we have never let go of that
ideal of self-sufficiency: working hard and doing it yourself.

If you have ever jealously thought of the woman who has it all-- the career, the
family, the perfectly manicured garden, the PTA presidency, and always seems to be
available to help you with the carpool--you know that self-sufficiency is desirable.
Some of the most highly praised individuals in our society are the ones we look up
to for the amazing balancing acts they perform every day.

However, expert Peggy Collins has coined a new term she calls Self-Sufficiency
Syndrome. In her new book, Help is Not A Four-Letter Word: Why Doing It All is
Doing You In (McGraw-Hill, April 2007), Collins delves into the concept of burn out.
When self-sufficiency is taken to the extreme, it can isolate and press individuals
to a stress level beyond their breaking point. It's one aspect of our society that
is literally killing us.

"It is possible to be too independent for your own good," says Collins. "This is
about a new self-defeating behavior that has not been talked about before." She
shows how the syndrome takes a strength and turns it into a weakness.

Collins can discuss:
. How to identify the signs and symptoms of Self-Sufficiency Syndrome
. How to break the self-sufficiency cycle and ask for help when you really need it
. Who needs this message most: Women? Men? Parents?
